Vitamin B9: one ingredient, several forms
Decoding labels: the terms to look out for
| What you read | What it really means | Absorption level |
|---|---|---|
| Folic acid, pteroylmonoglutamic acid | Synthetic form that your body needs to convert | Depends on your genetics |
| 5-MTHF / L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate | Already active form that your body can use directly | High, for all women |
| Quatrefolic®, (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid as a glucosamine salt | Registered brand of fourth-generation 5-MTHF | Very high and stable |
| Metafolin®, (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid as a calcium salt | Another brand of 5-MTHF | High |
| Calcium folate | Less stable form of 5-MTHF | Medium to high |
Worth noting: Many brands highlight the dose (“400 µg”) on the front of the box, but do not always clearly specify which form they use. Always turn the box over and look for the exact name of the form of vitamin B9 in the ingredients list. If you only see “folic acid” or “pteroylmonoglutamic acid”, it is the conventional synthetic form. If you see “5-MTHF”, “L-methylfolate” or a brand name such as “Quatrefolic®”, it is a bioactive form.
