Implantation bleeding vs period: the main distinguishing criteria

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Timing | 6 to 12 days after ovulation | Every 25–35 days | Around ovulation | Variable, after a missed period |
| Colour | Pinkish to light brown | Bright red, then darker | Light brown or pinkish | Bright red, sometimes with clots |
| Flow | Very light, just traces | Moderate to heavy | Very light | Moderate to heavy |
| Duration | A few hours to 3 days | 3 to 7 days | 1 to 2 days | Variable, may persist |
| Clots | None | Possible | None | Possible |
| Pain | Very mild cramps | Moderate to severe cramps | Mild discomfort | Pronounced abdominal pain |
Menstrual cycle context
The timing of the bleeding within the cycle is also important.
Implantation bleeding usually occurs 6 to 10 days after the ovulatory phase, placing it a few days before the expected period.
Periods, by contrast, follow a woman’s usual cycle. They generally start 14 days after ovulation, when the cycle begins again if fertilisation has not occurred.
Implantation spotting can sometimes occur a few days before a positive pregnancy test.
